Got the above Monday. Almost threw it out because I thought it was junk mail. It’s actually the Chicago Marathon participant guide with my ID number on it. Aside from important information, you will need this pamphlet to present in order to get you bib, tracking device, freebies that is given during the Health and Fitness expo 2 days before the race.

As I was looking at the course map, I got excited since most of the area is familiar to me – downtown Chicago (of course), then there’s near little Chinatown, then the big Chinatown, little Italy and it even goes as far as Tom’s office building. I smile when I saw the spectator/cheering designation areas – as I tell Tom I am not sure if I can complete 26.2 miles by myself but I am pretty confident (barring any injuries or hot weather) I can do it with volunteers and well-meaning bystanders cheering on and shouting encouragements. They do give your adrenaline a boost. Starting and finish line will be at Grant Park – the same park where Obama was proclaimed president.

Another thing I am excited about this race is the prospect of meeting my idol, Ultramarathon man Dean Karnazes at the expo. He ‘s the endurance runner who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. Not only that, to decompress after the last race in New York he ran an additional 1,300 miles back to the starting point in St. Louis Missouri. I just might be too awed, starstruck and shy to askĀ  for his autograph, or have a picture with him taken but I’ll be sure to snap a photo of him if I catch a sight of the guy.

I have been trying to get up earlier these days as part of my training since I have to wake up around 4pm during race day which means it’s time for me to go to bed.
