Thinking Out Loud…

…I put in notice on Facebook of not being “there” for a while. Some of my friends have assumed that I am doing it for Lent as I had a couple of years ago but I really just want to make the most of the momentum I have built up the past few weeks in completing personal projects that I wanted to lessen distractions, I have just revamped my website/online portfolio (so excited about the changes), finally designed and ordered business cards, did a weeklong freelancing gig…

…I now hope to focus on THE other project before Evan’s summer vacation starts, especially since I have already been approached into teaching digital media again like last summer so I don’t have that much window anymore…

… I really thought that I should be in the middle of running THAT other project by now but Evan going to Kindergarten had really thrown me off balance, things went through stops, starts, hiccups. I’d like to think I have adjusted to our new schedule. I’ve got ideas coming out my ears which would partly be to blame of me getting overwhelmed. But as I’ve learned with successfully putting my new folio in a surprisingly short time – keep it simple and just tweak as I go along.

…Which brings me to my dilemma about doing another marathon this spring. I am already halfway on my training and did 13.1 miles last weekend. It kills me how time consuming it is. I especially dislike the midweek 8-9 milers. Weekend long runs I don’t mind as much especially with this awesome winter weather we are having. However upon consultation with my multi-marathoner friend I was given good advice and more importantly reassurance of still being able to do a marathon even without having to follow a training guide to the T, so maybe there still might be hope in me doing another marathon a few weeks from now. For whatever my complaints, I do love it when I am in the training mode. So we’ll see…

…There’s a bug going around lately and unfortunately Evan caught it. He hasn’t been that sick for a long time. He had to miss school for 2 days and said good bye to an extended 4 day weekend (had fever for 3 days). He’s 100% right now but boy, getting him back to his old routine is so difficult without him putting up a fight at what it seems to be every step of the way. I just console myself that this comes in waves and this too shall pass…

Evan completing this Lego robot by himself while he was sick.

…I made Pho vietnamese chicken soup and boy how good it is! I don’t think I will make another chicken soup again without boiling the chicken first for 5 minutes, throwing out the broth, bring to boil again with roasted onion, ginger, sugar, fish sauce etc. So good!

…Thinking about revamping this blog as well, something more suited to my perspective now. I already have a new color scheme in mind but priorities first, I might even have long silences in this blog in the coming months until I get THAT project realized.

…Did something dumb the other week. Drove 20 miles into Chicago and forgot my wallet. Couldn’t pay for a $10 parking (for 1 hour) ticket. But a good samaritan (aka Parking Center manager) waved away the $8 and took the $2.00 I had with me. He said he was doing it for Evan. Will be sending them Giordano’s pizza as a thank you. Lesson learned aside from the obvious of double checking for the wallet (this is the first time that has happened to me here in my 8 1/2 years here in the US) is to put extra cash in the car and/or bag.

…I taught Evan to sing in my native dialect (bisaya). Told him I sang this to him many times as a baby. He now sings it to me every night during bedtime =)

…Was addicted to Downton Abbey a few weeks back too, now can’t wait for Season 2 on Netflix.

…Thinking of joining the church choir for Lent as my lenten sacrifice, we’ll see…

Certainly sounds like you are busy. I hope THAT project goes well.

The bug has been going around here too but LA has missed it thus far.

Ed, hope LA misses it. Evan’s teacher told me that last week, for the past 5 days 1 kid got sick each day. A couple of kids got strep too. Thankfully Evan was spared from that!

Loraine, now that you mentioned it, I didn’t put star anise in the soup and coriander (not sure if the recipe asks for the latter) too and didn’t even miss them. The soup was still so good! Yeah, you can do half marathon first as I did, you can start by checking into half-marathon training right now on the web and you’ll be surprised at how doable it actually is. Half-marathon training times is not too bad, it’s the full marathons that is too time-consuming.
